AAP Punjab Names Meet Hayer, Amritpal Singh Sukhanand as Election In-Charges for PUCSC Polls

Chandigarh, August 11, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab has appointed MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer and MLA Amritpal Singh Sukhanand as election in-charges for its student wing, Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), ahead of the upcoming Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) elections.

The appointments come as AAP begins preparations for the student polls, which are expected to be held next month. The party said the experience and youth connect of the two leaders would strengthen its outreach and campaign among Panjab University students.

Addressing the media, Sukhanand said ASAP’s state team, along with senior and former office-bearers, had held a detailed meeting on preparations for the elections and would work collectively to expand the organisation’s presence on campus.

He said AAP had consistently raised issues concerning education and student rights and sought to encourage greater participation of young people in politics. Panjab University, he added, had a distinguished history of producing leaders who contributed to Punjab and the country.

Sukhanand said the party and its student wing had supported student protests on issues including examination-related problems and paper leaks. He claimed that more than 70 paper leaks had raised concerns over the future of nearly two crore students and said the uncertainty had caused severe distress among young people.

The MLA said AAP would also focus on campus-specific issues, including cleanliness, hostel facilities and student safety. Referring to the death of a student following electrocution near an exposed electrical wire, he said such lapses could have devastating consequences for families.

Sukhanand said ASAP would raise both national student issues and local campus concerns during the PUCSC campaign. He cited the student body’s campaign concerning the Panjab University Senate, saying the Centre subsequently announced that Senate elections would be held again.

He also stressed the importance of student politics in nurturing future political leadership. AAP, he said, wanted to create an environment where students from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and other regions could develop into capable and honest public leaders.

“We want to produce leaders who, after leaving this university and entering public life, speak for the people and work for them with honesty, dedication and enthusiasm,” he said.

Sukhanand said AAP’s student wing would continue challenging a political system that, in his view, had traditionally kept young people away from active politics, while working to nurture a new generation committed to public service.
