The Punjab Government has allocated a ₹1 crore token grant for 2026-27 to strengthen awareness and prevention initiatives against drug abuse, with a major focus on community outreach across 12 districts and a state-level anti-drug event in Malout.
Of the sanctioned amount, ₹85 lakh will be utilised for district-level awareness and prevention activities, while ₹15 lakh has been earmarked for a state-level anti-drug awareness event to be organised in Malout, Sri Muktsar Sahib district, during August.
Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur said the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government was pursuing a comprehensive strategy against drug abuse by focusing on awareness, prevention, rehabilitation and community participation.
She said protecting the younger generation from drugs and creating a healthier, safer and more prosperous Punjab remained among the government’s key priorities.
The awareness campaign will cover Fazilka, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Rupnagar, SAS Nagar (Mohali), Pathankot, Kapurthala, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana and Patiala.
Schools, colleges, villages and urban communities will be involved in programmes aimed at highlighting the harmful effects of drug abuse and encouraging young people to adopt healthy, drug-free lifestyles.
The state-level event at Malout, to be held under Dr Baljit Kaur’s chairpersonship, will bring together government departments, educational institutions, youth groups, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
Describing the fight against drugs as a collective responsibility, Dr Baljit Kaur said families, educational institutions, social organisations and young people must work together to protect future generations.
“The fight against drugs is not the responsibility of the Government alone. Families, educational institutions, social organisations and the youth must come together to protect our future generations. Only through collective resolve and active public participation can we realise the vision of a drug-free Punjab,” she said.
The Minister said the government would continue expanding awareness and preventive programmes in partnership with stakeholders, with the objective of taking the anti-drug message to villages, towns and households across Punjab.
