West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s helicopter made an emergency landing at Kolaghat in East Midnapore district on Tuesday afternoon after deteriorating weather conditions forced the pilot to abandon the planned flight to Keshpur in West Midnapore.
The helicopter landed at the football ground of Kolaghat Balaka Mancha, located near the Kolaghat Thermal Power Plant. Adhikari had taken off from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata for Keshpur, where he was scheduled to attend a programme marking the martyrdom anniversary of freedom fighter Khudiram Bose.
According to initial information, the pilot decided to make the precautionary landing after weather conditions worsened during the journey. The Chief Minister subsequently travelled to Keshpur by road, while the helicopter later returned to Kolkata from Kolaghat.
Khudiram Bose, one of Bengal’s prominent freedom fighters, was born in Keshpur and was executed by the British during the freedom struggle.
After his Keshpur programme, Adhikari is scheduled to travel to neighbouring Bankura district, where he will meet officials from seven districts under the Western Region Development Board.
The meeting is expected to focus on the development roadmap for the region. The previous Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government had allegedly neglected the Board and failed to allocate funds for its activities in recent years, resulting in development projects remaining stalled for a prolonged period.
The new state government allocated funds for the Board in its first Budget, and Tuesday’s meeting is expected to discuss the utilisation of those funds and future development plans.
The Chief Minister is also scheduled to attend a family function of BJP MLA Niladri Sekhar Dana in Bankura.
Adhikari is expected to return to Kolkata later in the evening. It was not immediately clear whether he would travel back by helicopter or road.
