Actress and talk-show host Drew Barrymore has opened up about the emotional aftermath of divorce, saying it took her years to come to terms with the experience.
In a video shared from her talk show, Barrymore spoke with an audience member about the difficulty of moving forward after the end of a marriage. Recalling her own experience, she said, “Divorce took me years to get over,” before asking the guest how long she had been married. The woman replied that she had been married for 21 years.
Barrymore encouraged her to give herself time and focus on self-compassion rather than self-blame. She suggested that people often put themselves “on the back burner” while prioritising others and then blame themselves when things go wrong.
The actress also spoke about advice from her therapist, Barry Michaels, saying he had encouraged her to turn “self-loathing into self-love”.
Barrymore reflected on how difficult it can be to move beyond painful experiences, saying people can become “stuck” and find it difficult to rise above their circumstances. She urged the audience member to be patient with herself.
“Give yourself time,” Barrymore said, according to the video’s caption, which described the conversation as being about “the challenge of moving on after divorce”.
Barrymore has been married three times — to Jeremy Thomas, Tom Green and Will Kopelman.
She became a prominent child actor after starring in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982 and later appeared in films including Firestarter, Poison Ivy, Boys on the Side, Scream, Ever After, Never Been Kissed, Charlie’s Angels and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.
Her other credits include The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates and Blended with Adam Sandler, as well as Batman Forever, Donnie Darko, Music and Lyrics and Going the Distance. She won a Golden Globe for her performance as Edith Bouvier Beale in Grey Gardens and made her directorial debut with Whip It in 2009.
