India emerged as the world’s leading ship recycling nation in 2025, with its share of global ship recycling rising to 35.4 per cent from 30.1 per cent a year earlier, according to an official factsheet released on Tuesday.
The country’s ship recycling volume also registered a sharp increase, climbing from 1.86 million Gross Tonnes (GT) in 2024 to 2.99 million GT in 2025 — a growth of nearly 60 per cent.
The Alang-Sosiya ship recycling cluster in Gujarat remains the backbone of India’s ship recycling industry, accounting for around 98 per cent of the country’s total ship recycling activity. Recognised as the world’s largest ship recycling hub, the cluster has an annual recycling capacity of approximately 6 million GT.
Around 3.50 million metric tonnes (MMT) of steel is produced annually at Alang without exploiting natural resources. The cluster is supported by authorised ship recycling yards, downstream steel re-rolling mills and waste management infrastructure.
The Alang-Sosiya cluster has undergone extensive modernisation over the years and serves as India’s principal interface with the global ship recycling market.
India is now targeting a substantial expansion of its recycling capacity to around 9 million light displacement tonnes (LDT), nearly double the existing capacity. The expansion is planned through the development of the Alang Ship Recycling Yard.
The Safety Training and Labour Welfare Institute at the Alang-Sosiya ship recycling yard has cumulatively trained more than 1.5 lakh workers. Its programmes cover occupational safety, hazardous material handling and emergency response.
Apart from Alang, India has ship recycling facilities at Amar Iron Udyog in Kolkata and Steel Industrials Kerala Limited (SILK) in Kerala.
The government said the growth in recycling volumes reflects the expanding capacity and increasing global competitiveness of Indian ship recycling yards.
It also noted that India has achieved the target under Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030 of becoming the world’s leading ship recycling nation five years ahead of schedule.
