Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) on Tuesday honoured Punjab State Information Commissioner Harpreet Singh Sandhu for his contribution to documenting and promoting the university’s legacy, achievements, heritage and outreach.
The felicitation ceremony was presided over by PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Satbir Singh Gosal. Sandhu and his wife, Mrs Sandhu, received a green welcome on their arrival at the university.
The event was attended by PAU Registrar Dr Rishipal Singh (IAS), Director of Research Dr A.S. Dhatt, Dean of the College of Agriculture Dr C.S. Aulakh, Dean of the College of Community Science and College of Basic Sciences & Humanities Dr Kiran Bains, Dean of the College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology Dr Manjeet Singh, Additional Director of Extension Education Dr Prabhjot Singh Sandhu, Director Student Welfare Dr K.S. Suri, Additional Director Communication Dr T.S. Riar, Associate Director (Institutional Relations) Dr Vishal Bector, Associate Director Cultural Dr Rupinder Kaur and former Director Student Welfare Dr Nirmal Jaura, besides faculty members and students.
Welcoming the gathering, Dr T.S. Riar described Sandhu as a committed ambassador of PAU who had helped showcase the institution through publications, visual documentation, souvenirs and outreach initiatives. He also credited him with mobilising financial and administrative support for PAU-related projects.
Dr Gosal highlighted Sandhu’s longstanding association with PAU, including his family connection with the university through his father, S. Tarlochan Singh Sandhu, a former Estate Officer at PAU.
The Vice-Chancellor particularly appreciated Sandhu’s role in mobilising support for the renovation and revival of the Museum of Social History and Rural Life, which has subsequently gained wider visibility through the Punjab Government’s tourism platform.
Dr Gosal also referred to Sandhu’s documentation of PAU’s contribution to wheat research through the coffee-table book The Wheat Fields of Punjab, published by the Communication Centre, PAU, and released by the Governor of Punjab. His documentary National Heritage Peacock and pictorial work PAU Da Mor were also acknowledged for highlighting the university’s environmental, biodiversity and heritage contributions.
Dr Rishipal Singh said Sandhu’s creative documentation had helped enhance awareness of PAU’s heritage. He noted that the Museum of Social History and Rural Life had attracted around 95,000 school students, contributing to greater public awareness of the university and increased interest among prospective students.
Dr Nirmal Jaura recalled Sandhu’s efforts in supporting youth activities and cultural programmes at PAU.
In his address, Sandhu said meaningful achievements required institutional support and collaboration. He encouraged students to systematically document their academic and creative work, observing that such records could eventually become part of their personal achievements as well as institutional history. He assured PAU of his continued association and support.
PAU presented Sandhu with an honour and citation in recognition of his heritage services and contribution to promoting the university’s legacy and achievements.
The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Vishal Bector, Associate Director (Institutional Relations). The proceedings were conducted by Dr T.S. Riar, Additional Director Communication, PAU.
