Sanchita Kumar, wife of former acting Director General of Police (DGP) and Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Kumar, has resigned from her post as the West Bengal Information Commissioner, officials aware of the development said.
Sanchita Kumar, a former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer and former Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, was appointed to the post in March 2025 by then West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose after her name was recommended by the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government.
According to sources, she resigned from the post on Tuesday night, well before the completion of her tenure. It is learnt that she left for New Delhi soon after submitting her resignation.
Her resignation comes amid a changing political scenario in West Bengal. Rajeev Kumar, who retired from active police service and later entered Parliament as a Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member, is currently in New Delhi for the ongoing Parliament session.
Her decision to step down has drawn attention in political and bureaucratic circles due to her husband’s close association with the Trinamool Congress leadership. Some officials said her continuation in the post had become difficult amid the altered political environment in the state.
The development also comes against the backdrop of recent political shifts involving former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha members. Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Baraik resigned from the Upper House and were later elected again as Bharatiya Janata Party candidates. Former Trinamool MP Koel Mallick also resigned from the Rajya Sabha and indicated her intention to join the BJP.
These developments had triggered speculation over whether Rajeev Kumar could follow a similar political path. However, his presence at the Trinamool Congress’ Martyrs’ Day rally on July 21 appeared to put an end to such speculation, with Kumar reaffirming his association with the party led by Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee.
