The Punjab Government on Tuesday announced a series of welfare measures for Safai Sevaks and Sewermen employed in Urban Local Bodies, including regularisation of eligible contractual workers, direct contractual appointments for outsourced employees and a revised monthly remuneration of ₹20,520 from August 1.
Announcing the decisions at Punjab Bhawan, Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains said Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann had approved the conversion of outsourced sanitation workers serving in Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats into direct contractual employees after completion of three years of continuous service.
The Minister also announced that contractual Safai Sevaks and Sewermen who have completed five years of service, along with those engaged during 2021, will be regularised. He described the move as a significant step aimed at improving job security and welfare for sanitation workers across the state.
Explaining the implementation process, Bains said all Urban Local Bodies have been directed to place the matter before their respective Houses for approval. After resolutions are passed and service records of eligible employees are forwarded to the state government, the proposals will be processed for final approval.
He said sanitation workers shifted from outsourcing to direct contracts would receive a monthly remuneration of ₹20,520 with effect from August 1, while statutory contributions under applicable provisions would continue to be deposited in their respective accounts.
According to the Minister, the decisions were taken after consultations with representatives of sanitation workers’ unions. He said a Cabinet Sub-Committee comprising Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak held detailed discussions with union leaders and reached consensus on major issues, while remaining concerns would be addressed in the coming days.
Appealing to sanitation workers to resume duties, Bains urged employee unions to withdraw their strike in the larger public interest, particularly during the monsoon season, when uninterrupted sanitation services are crucial to preventing the spread of waterborne and vector-borne diseases.
He said the government remained committed to ensuring dignity, security and better working conditions for those responsible for maintaining cleanliness in Punjab’s towns and cities.
