Two persons were arrested in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Wednesday for allegedly confining and repeatedly raping a Class 7 student, officials said.
According to officials, the minor was allegedly sexually assaulted by a taxi driver and his friend after she boarded the taxi while returning home on September 6.
The girl’s father lodged a complaint at Gursai Police Station on Wednesday afternoon, alleging that his daughter had boarded a taxi driven by Zahoor Mushtaq alias Sonu, who allegedly took her to his house along with his friend, Mohd Irfan.
Officials said the accused allegedly confined the girl for three days and repeatedly raped her during that period. Acting on the complaint, police arrested both accused and launched further investigation.
“Both accused have been arrested and booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those pertaining to gangrape, kidnapping and wrongful confinement, as well as under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act,” an official said.
The alleged incident has triggered anger, grief and concern among residents of the border district.
The case comes amid another serious sexual assault case in neighbouring Kishtwar district, where a 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a school teacher in the Chatroo area. The girl subsequently died after allegedly being subjected to an attempted termination of pregnancy by persons who were not qualified to perform the procedure.
Police in Kishtwar had earlier arrested seven persons allegedly linked to the case, while the investigation was later transferred to the Crime Branch. The Crime Branch has since arrested a 10th accused following the transfer of the high-profile case from the local police.
Investigators have alleged that school teacher Khalid Hussain sexually assaulted the minor repeatedly over several months, resulting in her pregnancy. Hussain and his brother Tariq Hussain allegedly conspired to terminate the pregnancy by administering medicines, after which the girl died.
