Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has indicated that the party could consider restoring responsibilities to Akash Anand if his father-in-law and former BSP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Siddharth gives up his political ambitions and retires completely from politics.
In a series of posts on X on Wednesday, Mayawati said Siddharth should rise above personal and family interests to enable Anand to work independently within the party.
She said the upcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab are particularly significant for the BSP and the broader Bahujan movement inspired by Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s vision of transforming the “Bahujan society” from an oppressed community into the ruling class.
Mayawati said BSP workers, office-bearers, supporters and well-wishers were working with dedication and sacrifice to secure a strong electoral outcome in the three states.
She said the Bahujan community, the BSP and the Ambedkarite movement were facing serious challenges from rival political parties and caste-based forces, particularly over issues such as reservation.
Appealing for support from all sections of society, Mayawati urged members of the Dalit community not to allow personal or family interests to obstruct the larger objectives of the movement. She warned that history would not forgive those who hindered its cause.
Mayawati said the BSP leadership had been carefully assessing the conduct and behaviour of individuals while taking decisions regarding their inclusion and responsibilities in the party.
She said disciplinary action had also been taken against those who created obstacles in the party’s path, identifying Ashok Siddharth as a prominent example.
According to Mayawati, Siddharth had been given several opportunities to reform but continued to place his personal and family interests and political ambitions above the BSP’s mission.
She alleged that the consequences of Siddharth’s actions had affected not only him but also his son-in-law, Akash Anand. She further claimed that Siddharth had not shown sufficient concern for either Anand’s political future or the BSP movement.
Mayawati said Siddharth, given his position, should have set an example of sacrifice and commitment before the party and society, but alleged that the opposite had happened.
She said that, keeping in mind the interests of the BSP and the Bahujan movement, as well as the future of Siddharth’s family and Akash Anand, he still had an opportunity to renounce his political ambitions and retire completely from politics.
Mayawati added that only after Siddharth’s complete retirement from politics would Akash Anand be able to work freely within the BSP. She said the party could then sympathetically consider restoring his responsibilities, adding that there was broad consensus within the party in favour of such a course.
