A 38-year-old autorickshaw driver allegedly killed his wife before dying by suicide following a dispute at their residence in Vibhutipura under the jurisdiction of Bengaluru’s HAL Police Station, police said on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Raghavendra, son of Muniraju, and his wife, Shruthi Raghavendra, 30, who worked as a housemaid.
According to police, a family dispute is suspected to have preceded the incident, which took place late Tuesday night. Raghavendra allegedly attacked Shruthi with a beer bottle and stabbed her in the stomach, killing her at the spot. He later allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself inside the house.
The couple’s two children were staying with their maternal grandparents in Davanagere at the time of the incident. Only Raghavendra and Shruthi were present at their Vibhutipura home.
Preliminary information suggests that the couple frequently argued over Shruthi’s habit of watching reels on her mobile phone. Police suspect that an argument broke out on Tuesday night after Raghavendra allegedly found her watching reels, following which the dispute escalated into violence.
However, police said the reels-related dispute is only a suspected trigger and that the exact motive and circumstances leading to the deaths have yet to be established.
After receiving information about the incident, HAL Police reached the residence and conducted an inspection. The bodies were shifted for further legal procedures, and a case has been registered.
The couple had reportedly fallen in love around 18 years ago while they were studying and later married with the consent of their families. They subsequently moved from Davanagere to Bengaluru and purchased a house in Vibhutipura. Shruthi was reportedly working at an apartment complex.
Police are continuing their investigation to establish the sequence of events and determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths.
