The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Mumbai Zonal Unit has secured the conviction of two men in an inter-state drug trafficking case involving the seizure of 1,127 kg of ganja. The NDPS Special Court in Biloli, Nanded district, Maharashtra, sentenced both accused to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh each.
The convicts have been identified as Gokul Narayan Rajput (32), a truck owner-driver from Aurangabad district, and Sunil Yadav Mahajan (35), a co-driver from Jalgaon district. The NCB arrested them on November 15, 2021, while they were allegedly transporting the large consignment.
Acting on specific intelligence, an NCB team intercepted an Ashok Leyland truck at Manjram village in Nanded district. During the search, officials recovered 49 polythene gunny bags concealed beneath a load of industrial iron rods. The bags contained 112 packets of ganja weighing a total of 1,127 kg.
The investigation found that the contraband had allegedly been loaded at Ankampalli in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh and was being transported to Jalgaon district in Maharashtra.
The NCB also found that Rajput had previously been booked in criminal cases related to attempted murder and kidnapping. Investigators said the truck, which was owned by Rajput, had already been blacklisted by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) but was still being used for illegal transportation activities.
During the trial, the prosecution established that both accused were in conscious possession of a commercial quantity of ganja and had failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for possessing the contraband.
The Additional Sessions Judge, Biloli, convicted both men under various provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The court also ordered confiscation of the truck used for transporting the drugs.
The NCB said the conviction reflects its efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks through effective investigation and prosecution and contributes to the broader goal of a drug-free India.
