22-Year-Old Woman Allegedly Killed by Father and Brother, Murder Staged as Road Accident

A 22-year-old woman in Ahmedabad was allegedly killed by her father and brother in a suspected honour killing, with the accused family members later attempting to pass off the murder as a road accident, police said.

The victim, identified as Sofia, worked as a hospital receptionist. She was reportedly riding pillion on a motorcycle with her father and brother on the night of August 12 when the alleged murder took place.

According to the investigation, Sofia’s brother, identified as 38-year-old Mohmand Habil, diverted the motorcycle onto a secluded dirt track near Gheljipura village. Police allege that he then struck Sofia on the head three times with a hammer.

The accused allegedly took her body back to the main road and damaged the motorcycle to make the incident appear to have been caused by a collision with a speeding vehicle.

Habil subsequently approached the authorities and claimed that a speeding vehicle had hit their motorcycle from behind near the Gheljipura intersection. He reportedly told police that Sofia suffered severe head injuries in the collision, while he sustained bruises.

Sofia was taken to Sola Civil Hospital, where she died during treatment the following day.

The case initially came to light as a hit-and-run incident, but the police investigation subsequently pointed towards the victim’s own family members.

Investigators reportedly found that Sofia’s father, Mohmand Farooq, and brother had been harbouring resentment after a video showing Sofia with a man went viral around three months before the incident. Police suspect that concerns over social humiliation led the two to allegedly conspire to kill her in the name of protecting the family’s reputation.

According to police, Habil had concealed an iron hammer inside his trousers before leaving with Sofia and their father. Investigators allege that the father and son then carried out the murder and staged the scene to resemble a road accident.

Both accused are in custody, and a murder case has been registered against them. Further investigation is underway.
