The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested a Panchayat Secretary for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹20,000 in Patiala district as part of its ongoing campaign against corruption in the state.
According to a VB spokesperson, the accused, identified as Gurjant Singh, is posted at the office of the Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO) at Bhunerheri in Patiala district. He was arrested red-handed while allegedly accepting the bribe from a complainant.
The case was registered on the complaint of a resident of village Bhatian in Patiala district. The complainant told the Vigilance Bureau that the Gram Panchayat had passed resolutions concerning the renovation and construction of a local Dharamshala and Community Hall.
The Panchayat Secretary allegedly demanded ₹20,000 from the complainant for processing the resolutions and taking further action on the proposed development works. The accused allegedly told the complainant that part of the bribe would be distributed among the Panches of the Gram Panchayat for obtaining their signatures on the resolutions.
Unwilling to pay the illegal gratification, the complainant approached the VB Patiala. Acting on the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau laid a trap and caught Gurjant Singh while accepting the bribe in the presence of two official witnesses.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau police station in Patiala. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
