The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on the death of Punjab resident Gulzar Singh, accusing him of indulging in “dirty politics” over the tragedy.
AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia defended the state government’s handling of the case and rejected allegations linking any minister or MLA with Gulzar Singh’s death.
Kejriwal, in a post on social media platform X, said the Punjab government was fighting what he described as a “decisive war” against drugs. He alleged that the drug menace in Punjab had spread during the tenures of successive Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP governments.
He said Punjab was the only state in the country waging such a determined battle against drugs and claimed that the Bhagwant Mann government was working to dismantle the network.
Kejriwal also shared a video purportedly showing Congress leaders visiting Gulzar Singh’s village. He alleged that Congress workers were driven away by villagers after attempting to politicise the death.
Expressing grief over Gulzar Singh’s death, Kejriwal said no minister or MLA of the Punjab government had any connection with the incident. He urged Rahul Gandhi to visit the village and verify the facts before making allegations.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann also urged Rahul Gandhi not to “do politics over dead bodies”, saying that Punjabis did not support such politics.
Mann said the police had already arrested all the accused identified by Gulzar Singh’s family in the case. He reiterated that the government would not spare anyone involved in drug trafficking.
Manish Sisodia, meanwhile, accused Rahul Gandhi of making allegations without considering the statements of the victim’s family or the FIR. Referring to a statement by Gulzar Singh’s son, Sisodia said the son had stated on camera that his father was not pressured by any minister.
Sisodia also attacked Rahul Gandhi over his alleged admiration for Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and accused him of using Gulzar Singh’s death for political purposes. He demanded that Rahul Gandhi apologise to the deceased’s son for what he described as false allegations.
The AAP leaders maintained that the Mann government’s campaign against drugs would continue and asserted that political affiliation or official position would not shield anyone involved in drug trafficking from action.
