West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday took a dig at former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee amid protests during her visit to Bijpur in North 24 Parganas district, saying she should wear a headset when venturing out in public if she does not want to hear slogans against her.
Adhikari also denied Mamata Banerjee’s allegation that BJP-backed miscreants were behind the protests surrounding her convoy.
Mamata Banerjee had visited Bijpur to meet the family of Birju Keot, the husband of Trinamool Congress councillor Jenny Sharma Keot, who had resigned from the Kanchrapara Municipality. Keot, who had been arrested in connection with several allegations, including extortion, died in jail on Saturday.
His family alleged that he was beaten to death in custody, while the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
During her visit on Sunday afternoon, Mamata Banerjee faced protests, with reports that shoes, mud, bricks and stones were hurled at her vehicle. She alleged that BJP-backed miscreants were responsible and said she could have suffered serious injuries had the vehicle’s windows been open.
Reacting to the incident, Adhikari said he had not seen any BJP members or party flags among the protesters. He also pointed out that Mamata Banerjee continues to have Z-plus security and said police personnel had provided security cover to her during the incident.
“The protests were a result of public outrage,” Adhikari said, adding that the deceased’s family wanted the circumstances surrounding Keot’s death to be properly investigated and justice delivered.
Taking a further swipe at the former Chief Minister, Adhikari said, “Mamata Banerjee should wear a headset when stepping out in public. That way, she wouldn’t have to hear chants of ‘thief’.”
Adhikari made the remarks while visiting Panihati in North 24 Parganas to attend a memorial programme marking the second anniversary of the death of the RG Kar rape-murder victim.
