WhatsApp users in several countries reported difficulties sharing photos, videos, stickers, GIFs and other multimedia files on Monday, with the disruption appearing to affect the platform’s media-sharing services.
Outage-tracking platform Downdetector began receiving user reports early Monday. Its data showed that 41 per cent of complaints were related to messaging, while 40 per cent concerned the application itself and 13 per cent involved notifications.
For many users, text messages continued to work normally, but photos and videos either took unusually long to upload or remained stuck. Some users reported seeing loading icons or prompts to retry, while others said images appeared in chats but failed to complete the upload process.
Stickers and GIFs were also reportedly affected, suggesting that the disruption was particularly impacting multimedia features. Larger files appeared to face longer delays or failed uploads in some cases.
Reports came from multiple countries, including India, the UK, France, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Spain and Colombia. The widespread complaints suggested that the issue was not confined to a particular region, although the exact scale of the disruption and the number of affected users remained unclear.
Users attempted several routine troubleshooting steps, including restarting their smartphones, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data and reinstalling WhatsApp. However, several said these measures did not resolve problems with sending photos and videos.
Downdetector also showed reports of WhatsApp service issues on Sunday. The platform had not issued an official statement regarding the reported disruption at the time of the reports.
