The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated a probe into the financial aspects of alleged irregularities in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission’s (JPSC) 14th Preliminary Examination and other recruitment tests by registering an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR).
The ECIR has been registered on the basis of an FIR filed by the Jharkhand Crime Investigation Department (CID), which is already investigating the alleged examination irregularities. The ED’s involvement will focus on suspected financial transactions and any possible money trail associated with the case.
The agency is expected to examine whether money changed hands in connection with the alleged irregularities, trace the source and movement of funds and identify individuals who may have been involved, besides determining their alleged roles if financial wrongdoing is established.
A five-member ED team from the agency’s Ranchi unit has reached the state capital to pursue the financial investigation. The team comprises an Assistant Director and four inspectors. Officials are likely to question people connected with the case and examine documents and financial records relevant to the probe.
The alleged irregularities in the JPSC 14th Preliminary Examination have so far resulted in 19 arrests, according to information available in the case. The wider investigation into the examination process is being handled by the Jharkhand CID.
The ED probe comes amid sustained student protests over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. The state government and student representatives had held marathon discussions over three consecutive days in an attempt to resolve the agitation.
The government has said several demands raised by the protesters were accepted during the discussions. However, the talks failed to produce a final settlement.
Students have been seeking a probe into the alleged irregularities, cancellation of examinations believed to have been affected and reforms to the recruitment examination system.
The ED’s move is expected to bring the financial dimension of the alleged examination irregularities under greater scrutiny as the state-level investigation continues.
