A rape accused in Ahmedabad was shot in the leg after allegedly attempting to escape police custody and snatching a police inspector’s service revolver during a late-night recovery operation in the Hebatpur area, officials said on Monday.
The accused, identified as Dhram Singh, was arrested on Sunday in connection with the alleged rape of a 23-year-old interior design student staying at a paying guest accommodation in Anandnagar.
Police had taken Singh to Hebatpur to recover the woman’s mobile phone, which he allegedly stole after the assault. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 7) Shivam Varma said the accused had undergone medical examination and DNA sampling before being taken to the location for the recovery proceedings.
“During the process of this recovery panchnama, the accused, in an attempt to escape police custody, tried to snatch the service revolver of Inspector RS Parmar. A scuffle ensued, and Constable Virendrasinh was injured. An officer fired two rounds at the accused’s leg, one of which hit him,” Varma told reporters outside the hospital.
Both Singh and the injured constable were taken to GMERS Sola Civil Hospital. Police said their conditions were stable.
Singh was brought to the hospital on a stretcher with his right foot bandaged. Senior police officers, including the Joint Commissioner of Police and DCP, also reached the hospital following the incident.
Police said a separate case would likely be registered against Singh at Bodakdev Police Station over the alleged attempt to escape custody and seize the officer’s firearm. The circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the police response are also being investigated.
Singh, a native of Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh, had reportedly joined the residential complex as a security guard only days before the alleged assault.
According to Joint Commissioner of Police Neeraj Badgujar, Singh allegedly attacked the student on the building’s terrace on Saturday night. Police alleged that he placed a wire around her neck, causing her to lose consciousness, before sexually assaulting her and fleeing with her mobile phone.
A manhunt involving more than 10 teams from Anandnagar police, the Local Crime Branch and Crime Branch led to his arrest within hours of the complaint, police said.
The investigation into the alleged rape and the subsequent confrontation during the recovery operation is continuing.
