Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday announced financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh for the family of K. Priyanka, a 28-year-old postgraduate medical student who succumbed to injuries after being run over by a car allegedly driven by a drunk youth in Rajamahendravaram.
Priyanka, a first-year MD student at GSL Medical College, sustained critical injuries on August 3 when a speeding car rammed into the scooty on which she was travelling with her friend near a mall. She was initially admitted to a local hospital and later shifted to KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad for advanced treatment.
Doctors had declared her brain-dead, and she died on Sunday afternoon. Her body will be taken to Eklaspur village in Telangana’s Jogulamba Gadwal district after the post-mortem for the last rites.
Expressing grief over the death, Naidu said it was particularly distressing that a promising young medical student had lost her life in such a tragic manner. He directed district officials to extend Rs 20 lakh assistance to her family and assured them of continued government support.
The Chief Minister also reviewed the case with the District Collector and Superintendent of Police and directed authorities to ensure stringent legal action against those responsible.
Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan also expressed condolences, describing Priyanka’s death as deeply distressing. He said the coalition government would take steps to ensure that the accused face severe punishment.
Police have arrested Suravarapu Daswanth and Andrew Joseph Edwards in connection with the incident. A case under provisions relating to attempt to commit culpable homicide was registered earlier, and the charges are expected to be revised following Priyanka’s death.
The police investigation has found that the accused allegedly rammed their car into the two-wheeler while attempting to flee after an altercation with mall staff. The two men were allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time.
