The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on Sunday paid tribute to the Indian revolutionaries who took part in the Kakori Train Action on August 9, 1925, remembering their role in the freedom struggle and their sacrifices against British rule.
In a post on X, the SSB described the Kakori action as a landmark episode that strengthened revolutionary sentiment against the British Empire. It particularly remembered Ram Prasad Bismil, Chandrashekhar Azad and other revolutionaries for their courage, sacrifice and commitment to the country.
The Kakori Train Action was carried out near Kakori in present-day Uttar Pradesh by revolutionaries associated with the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). The operation was planned by Bismil and Ashfaqulla Khan to raise funds for purchasing weapons for the revolutionary movement.
On August 9, 1925, revolutionaries stopped the Number 8 Down train travelling from Shahjahanpur to Lucknow. As the train passed Kakori, Rajendra Lahiri pulled the alarm chain while other revolutionaries overpowered the guard. They targeted the government treasury cash being transported in the guard’s cabin and did not take passengers’ belongings.
The group recovered around Rs 8,000, which represented tax revenue collected by the British administration and was intended to finance the revolutionary organisation.
The action led to a major crackdown and the arrest of several revolutionaries. The Chief Court of Oudh delivered its judgment on August 22, 1925. Ram Prasad Bismil, Roshan Singh, Rajendra Lahiri and Ashfaqulla Khan were sentenced to death.
Sachindranath Sanyal, Sachindra Bakshi, Govind Charan Kar, Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee and Mukundi Lal were sentenced to deportation to the Cellular Jail in the Andamans.
Manmath Nath Gupta received 14 years’ imprisonment, while Raj Kumar Sinha, Vishnu Sharan Dublish, Ram Krishna Khatri and Suresh Chandra Bhattacharya were sentenced to 10 years each. Their petitions for clemency were rejected.
The SSB said the sacrifices of the revolutionaries remain an enduring legacy and continue to inspire the values of national service, duty and devotion.
