A 28-year-old postgraduate medical student, who was critically injured after allegedly being run over by a car driven by two intoxicated youths at a mall in Andhra Pradesh’s Rajamahendravaram on August 3, succumbed to her injuries at a Hyderabad hospital on Sunday.
K. Priyanka, a first-year MD student at GSL Medical College, was declared dead at KIMS Hospital, Secunderabad, at 3.25 p.m. She was a native of Eklaspur village in Telangana’s Jogulamba Gadwal district.
Priyanka was riding a scooter with her friend Umesh when a speeding car allegedly rammed into their two-wheeler near the mall’s entrance. She suffered severe injuries and was initially treated at a local hospital before being shifted to Hyderabad. She had remained on ventilator support and had earlier been declared brain-dead.
Following her death, police are set to alter the case from an attempt to commit culpable homicide to culpable homicide.
East Godavari Superintendent of Police D. Narasimha Kishore said a case had initially been registered under Section 110 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Suravarapu Daswanth and Andrew Joseph Edwards. He said more stringent provisions would be invoked following Priyanka’s death.
According to the police investigation, the accused allegedly rammed their car into the scooter three times while attempting to flee after an altercation with mall staff. The two men were reportedly denied entry after being found intoxicated and allegedly assaulted staff members.
When security personnel attempted to stop them, the accused allegedly drove away at high speed in a rash manner and struck Priyanka and Umesh near the mall gate before fleeing the scene.
Police registered the case based on Umesh’s statement and arrested both accused. The SP said the investigation was being conducted impartially and that there was no political pressure on the police.
Priyanka’s father, Venkatesh, has sought stringent action against those responsible. He said the family has faith in the police investigation and judiciary and expects justice.
Her body will be taken to Eklaspur village after the postmortem for the last rites.
