Several women beneficiaries became emotional after meeting Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at the Delhi Assembly on Monday, where she distributed bicycles to students under the Vidya Vahini Yojana aimed at promoting girls’ education and empowerment.
Gupta said the Delhi government was working to strengthen the confidence of girls and support their development through initiatives focused on education, safety, dignity, healthcare and overall well-being.
“It is the self-confidence of Delhi’s daughters that Delhi government wants to strengthen. Our government stands with them to help them move forward with greater confidence,” she said.
The Chief Minister said the government wanted to address the needs of girls from birth and empower them through various welfare initiatives, including the Lakhpati Yojana.
She also highlighted the importance of helping girls become self-reliant as they progress through school.
“We are working to ensure that as a girl child grows and reaches Class 9, she receives a bicycle and becomes more independent,” Gupta said, adding that several schemes introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi were aimed at empowering women and girls.
Under the Vidya Vahini Yojana, bicycles were distributed to students to facilitate their access to schools and encourage regular attendance, particularly among girls.
The event also coincided with political protests over the implementation of the Delhi government’s Lakshmi Yojana.
BJP workers alleged that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and MLAs were attempting to obstruct implementation of the scheme. A separate demonstration was held outside the office of Leader of Opposition Atishi and was led by former BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri.
BJP leader Harish Oberoi told IANS that women had gathered outside the residences and offices of AAP legislators to protest against their alleged opposition to the scheme.
“All these women have come to protest against the stand taken by Aam Aadmi Party MLAs. Our respected Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has launched the Lakshmi Yojana, under which women will receive Rs 2,500. However, when the issue was discussed in the Assembly, AAP MLAs opposed it and walked out of the House,” Oberoi said.
