Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Sunday questioned Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal over what he described as a desperate bid to forge an electoral alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Warring took a swipe at Badal over the SAD’s changed position on delimitation of Assembly and parliamentary constituencies, recalling that the party had opposed the Delimitation Bill in April and described it as being against Punjab’s interests.
“Why did your position change within just three months?” Warring asked, alleging that Badal had now become “more loyal than the king” in an apparent attempt to win the BJP’s favour.
The Punjab Congress chief claimed that Badal was seeking an alliance with the BJP as part of efforts to revive the SAD’s political fortunes. He recalled that ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when the two parties failed to reach an alliance, Badal had maintained that the SAD would not compromise on Punjab’s interests.
Warring alleged that the SAD chief had now abandoned that position in pursuit of political survival.
“When the Akalis failed to reach an alliance with the BJP ahead of the parliamentary elections, Sukhbir had claimed that he did not want to compromise on the interests of Punjab. Now that he is desperate for his own survival, he has simply forgotten those interests,” Warring said.
He described the alleged shift as another example of what he termed the SAD leadership’s political opportunism.
Warring further claimed that even if the SAD and BJP join hands for the 2027 elections, the alliance would not improve their electoral prospects. He alleged that people of Punjab had not forgotten the issues of sacrilege or the farmers’ agitation, for which he held the two parties politically responsible.
According to Warring, any electoral understanding between the two parties would instead highlight their “opportunism” before the people of Punjab.
