Enforcement Directorate (ED) Director Rahul Navin has been granted a one-year extension in service by the Union government, allowing him to continue in the post until August 13, 2027, an official said on Sunday.
The extension, approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, will take effect from August 13. According to a circular issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Navin will continue as Director of Enforcement beyond his superannuation date of July 31, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Navin, an Indian Revenue Service officer, has been heading the agency responsible for enforcing laws relating to foreign exchange management and prevention of money laundering.
The ED, established in 1956, completed 70 years on May 1, 2026. During the agency’s 70th Enforcement Day celebrations, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said its powers were intended to combat financial crimes including money laundering, hawala transactions, benami properties and corporate fraud.
Chaudhary said the ED had attached assets worth around Rs 2.36 lakh crore as of March 31 this year, of which more than Rs 63,000 crore had been returned to rightful owners, including banks, investors and homebuyers. He also highlighted the growing challenge posed by cyber and online financial crimes and called for greater coordination among central agencies.
He said the government follows a zero-tolerance approach towards corruption and also inaugurated the ED’s Jaipur Zonal office during the event.
Navin, meanwhile, said financial crimes were evolving from traditional bank frauds and corporate scams to cryptocurrency fraud, cyber-enabled offences, terror financing and narcotics trafficking. He said the ED was adapting its strategy by targeting the financial networks behind such crimes.
He also highlighted the agency’s growing role in international anti-money laundering cooperation, asset recovery and related global frameworks.
