Filmmaker Anees Bazmee recently recalled an amusing yet tense incident involving legendary actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor during his appearance on The Kapil Sharma Show.
Bazmee revealed that Raj Kapoor, who would generally shoot only three to four takes in a day, once ended up doing around 17 to 18 shots. Pleased with the day’s progress, Kapoor announced a party for the entire cast and crew in the evening.
However, the celebratory mood on the set suddenly changed when Bazmee realised that actor Kharbanda had been given the wrong costume.
“ Around 7-7:30 pm, I felt that we had given the wrong clothes to actor Kharbanda. I told the fellow assistants. So, everyone on the set was happy except us five assistants,” Bazmee recalled.
The chief assistant eventually informed Raj Kapoor about the mistake, leaving the veteran filmmaker upset. Kapoor reportedly asked, “Where is my assistant?” and all the assistants were subsequently reprimanded.
Bazmee said the timing made the situation even more uncomfortable as the entire team was expected to attend the party that evening.
“The problem was that there was also a party in the evening, which we had to attend,” he said.
At the party, the assistants were repeatedly questioned about the mistake. “Everyone was looking at us as if we had committed a massive crime,” Bazmee recalled.
Bazmee made his directorial debut with Hulchul in 1995, starring Vinod Khanna, Ajay Devgn and Kajol. He achieved his first major commercial success with Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha in 1998, which featured Ajay Devgn and Kajol and emerged as one of the year’s highest-grossing Hindi films.
Over the years, Bazmee has directed several successful films, including No Entry (2005), Welcome (2007), Singh Is Kinng (2008), Ready (2011), Welcome Back (2015), Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022) and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (2024).
He is currently working on an untitled project featuring Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan in the lead roles.
