Samajwadi Party leader and Maharashtra MLA Abu Azmi has questioned the circumstances surrounding the death of Aban Ahmed, son of the late gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, and called for an impartial investigation into the incident.
In an interaction with IANS, Azmi said the circumstances surrounding the incident had raised questions about whether justice was being delivered. He particularly pointed to the fact that, according to his account, Ahmed was in police custody when the incident occurred.
“The circumstances in which the incident occurred while the person was under police custody do not give a sense of confidence that justice is being delivered,” Azmi said, stressing that the law should take its course without political or administrative interference.
Asked whether other members of the family could also face a threat, Azmi said he could not comment with certainty but maintained that there should be no threat to them.
When asked who could be behind the incident, he questioned, “He was killed while in police custody; who could be behind it?”
Azmi also alleged that the government was seeking to project its authority and suggested that the circumstances, which have been described in some reports as a road accident, warranted a comprehensive investigation.
He called for an independent probe by a credible central investigating agency, saying this would help establish the facts, address doubts and strengthen public confidence in the justice system.
The SP leader reiterated that the truth could emerge only through an investigation conducted independently and without political or administrative influence.
