Bihar Police have arrested a man from Khagaria district for allegedly posing as an IAS officer and using a fake identity to cheat villagers and local residents, officials said on Sunday.
The accused has been identified as Manish Kumar. According to police, he allegedly displayed forged ‘Government of India’ identity cards and used similar tags on his private vehicles to establish his credentials and deceive people.
Police launched an investigation after receiving complaints from people who became suspicious of his activities. A team formed under the direction of Khagaria Superintendent of Police subsequently arrested Kumar.
During questioning, the accused allegedly claimed links with the Central Vigilance Commission and said he worked as a secret agent for National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Police said both claims were found to be false. A fake identity card identifying him as an IAS officer was also recovered.
A search of his residence led to the recovery of around 31 litres of foreign liquor and two antlers, which police said were believed to be those of a swamp deer and could attract provisions under the Wildlife Protection Act.
Police also seized a Tesla car and a Tata Safari carrying ‘Government of India’ tags. The Tesla was described by police as a high-end model equipped with advanced automated-driving features.
The investigation also resulted in the recovery of five Apple mobile phones, two laptops, 20 credit cards issued by different banks, eight debit cards and four chequebooks.
Police said the seized documents and articles are being examined as part of the investigation. Authorities are also verifying reports that Kumar may have accumulated assets in Bihar, other states and even abroad.
Officials said the probe is not limited to his alleged impersonation and fraud, with investigators examining his financial transactions, assets and possible wider links.
Further legal action is being taken following his arrest.
