The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U) has crossed a major milestone, with more than 1.25 crore houses sanctioned and over one crore homes completed and handed over to beneficiaries across the country, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said on Sunday.
The ministry said 2.09 lakh additional houses were sanctioned last week under PMAY-U 2.0 for economically weaker section (EWS) families across 16 states and Union Territories.
The approvals were given at the eighth meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee under PMAY-U 2.0, chaired by Satendra Singh, Secretary, Department of Urban Development, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Of the newly sanctioned houses, around 1.42 lakh fall under the Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) vertical. Under this component, eligible beneficiaries receive financial assistance of up to Rs 2.5 lakh to construct pucca houses on their own land.
Another 67,045 houses have been approved under the Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) vertical, through which public and private agencies develop affordable housing projects in partnership with states and UTs.
With the latest approvals, the total number of houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0 has crossed 18.38 lakh. These include 14.40 lakh BLC houses, 2.48 lakh AHP houses, 1.36 lakh houses under the Interest Subsidy Scheme and 13,046 under Affordable Rental Housing.
During the meeting, the ministry reviewed implementation across states and UTs, including the pace of construction, geo-tagging, fund utilisation, beneficiary verification and occupancy.
The Secretary stressed timely implementation, release of funds, effective monitoring and coordination among stakeholders to ensure eligible urban families receive the benefits without delay.
The ministry said PMAY-U has also placed significant emphasis on women’s ownership of homes. Of the more than 1.25 crore houses sanctioned under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, one crore have been allotted in the name of women or jointly with women.
According to the ministry, this focus on women’s ownership is aimed at strengthening financial security, social empowerment and their role in household decision-making, while improving living conditions and economic security for urban families.
