President Pezeshkian meets Supreme Leader Khamenei amid Iran’s economic and conflict challenges

Tehran, August 9, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met Supreme Leader Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei on Saturday to discuss the country’s economic situation, people’s livelihood concerns and developments related to the ongoing conflict, Iranian media reported.

According to semi-official Mehr news agency, the meeting focused on addressing public needs as well as the country’s current circumstances and the challenges ahead. The two leaders also discussed resources, government expenditure, energy and economic engagement with foreign countries.

The meeting came days after Pezeshkian said that communication with Khamenei had become “very difficult” amid the prevailing situation, while describing the Supreme Leader’s presence as a major source of strength for Iran.

Pezeshkian said Iran was confronting what he described as its “most difficult” circumstances, citing intensified banking sanctions, restrictions on foreign transactions, a naval blockade and the ongoing war.

He also claimed that the United States and Israel had killed former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28, saying they had expected Iran to collapse following the action. Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei, was subsequently selected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader by the Assembly of Experts in early March.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday that Tehran was not currently engaged in negotiations with Washington.

Speaking to reporters at the Centre for Political and International Studies of Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Araghchi said intermediaries were continuing efforts to facilitate the resumption of talks.

“We currently have no negotiations with the United States,” he said, adding that Iran would not resume discussions until Washington addressed what Tehran described as violations of a memorandum of understanding and other breaches.

The developments come as Iran continues to face pressure on its economy and foreign relations amid the ongoing conflict and sanctions.
