The United Nations Office at Geneva has featured the arrival of five peacocks gifted by India at Ariana Park as its “Photo of the Week”, highlighting the symbolic gesture linked to India’s national bird and the century-old presence of peacocks at the UN complex.
The UN Geneva office shared photographs of the birds on X, saying the five peacocks had arrived at Ariana Park “thanks to the Permanent Mission of India in Geneva”. The gesture, it noted, continues a tradition dating back more than a century.
On August 7, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Arindam Bagchi, formally presented the five peacocks to UN Office at Geneva Director-General Tatiana Valovaya during a special ceremony.
The birds comprise four blue peacocks and one white peacock, reflecting the blue and white colours associated with the United Nations.
Valovaya thanked the Indian government for the gesture and said the birds would initially remain in enclosed habitats for about three months before being allowed to move freely in Ariana Park.
Bagchi and Valovaya also acknowledged the support of BioParc Geneva, which helped source the peacocks and will care for them during their initial period at the UN complex.
The Permanent Mission of India said the donation symbolises India’s partnership with the United Nations and its commitment to multilateralism, while also showcasing the country’s rich natural heritage and emphasis on biodiversity conservation.
Peacocks have been part of Ariana Park, home to the UN Office at Geneva, for more than 100 years. India had earlier gifted a pair of peacocks to the UNOG in 1981.
The Indian mission described the latest donation as a symbol of grace, beauty and resilience, and said it reaffirmed India’s commitment to environmental stewardship, international cooperation and multilateralism.
