Indian-American golfer Sahith Theegala dropped out of the top 10 at the Wyndham Championship after carding a 1-under 69 in the third round, leaving him tied for 11th heading into the final round of the PGA TOUR’s regular-season finale.
Theegala, 27, had made a sensational start to the tournament with an 8-under 62 that put him second on the leaderboard. However, back-to-back rounds of 69 have seen him slip to 10-under after 54 holes.
Theegala began Saturday’s round strongly, making three birdies over his opening five holes. His progress was checked by bogeys on the sixth, 13th and 14th holes, bringing him back to even par for the round.
He regained momentum with successive birdies on the 15th and 16th but gave one shot back at the 18th to close with a 69.
Another Indian-origin golfer, Aaron Rai, shot a 3-under 69 to move to 5-under and is tied for 56th. Akshay Bhatia and Sudarshan Yellamaraju chose to rest ahead of the FedExCup Playoffs.
Beau Hossler and Michael Brennan share the lead at 16-under 194. Hossler carded a 4-under 66 despite two rain delays, while Brennan fired a 63, finishing with a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole.
They lead Tom Kim by one shot, with Alex Noren and Alex Smalley another stroke behind.
Hossler, ranked 122nd in the FedExCup standings, needs a victory to have a mathematical chance of moving into the top 70 and qualifying for the Playoffs. His 31-hole bogey-free run ended on the par-3 16th after a weather delay, when he three-putted from 30 feet.
England’s Jordan Smith, ranked 68th, strengthened his Playoffs position with a hole-in-one on the 16th using a 9-iron. The ace earned him one million reward points from tournament sponsor Wyndham.
Keegan Bradley, at No. 72 after a 1-under 69, remains outside the projected Playoffs field and needs a strong final round. Brooks Koepka, meanwhile, was eliminated from contention after a 74 left him 11 shots behind the required position.
Theegala will now aim for a strong finish in Sunday’s final round as he seeks to close the regular season on a high.
