Veteran actress Zeenat Aman has spoken about the fleeting nature of fame and why people should not allow it to determine their sense of self-worth.
During an interaction with filmmaker Karan Johar on his popular chat show Koffee With Karan, the Satyam Shivam Sundaram actress reflected on how public perception can change rapidly depending on a person’s position in the social and professional hierarchy.
Zeenat said fame is too unpredictable to serve as a measure of one’s value, noting that public sentiment can shift from admiration to criticism and even sympathy before returning to appreciation.
“Fame is such a fickle thing, and you cannot hinge your sense of self-worth on that because one day you’re loved, the next day you’re disliked, the third day you’re hated, the fourth day you’re pitied, and a few days down the road they will resurrect you again,” she told Johar.
She added that there was little reason to base one’s self-worth on something so changeable.
Zeenat Aman was among the most successful actresses of her era. She won the Femina Miss India title and Miss Asia Pacific International pageant in 1970 before making her Bollywood debut with Hulchul in 1971.
She shot to prominence with Dev Anand’s Haré Rama Haré Krishna, in which she played his sister. The actress subsequently became known for performances in films including Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Ajanabee, Warrant, Chori Mera Kaam, Dharam Veer, Chhailla Babu, Hum Kisise Kum Naheen and The Great Gambler.
In her personal life, Zeenat Aman married actor-director Sanjay Khan in the late 1970s, but the marriage ended within about a year. She later married actor Mazhar Khan in 1985 and remained married to him until his death in 1998.
