Actor, producer and writer Harman Baweja recalled a formative lesson from his father and filmmaker Harry Baweja about the role of a director as the 1996 film ‘Diljale’ completed 30 years on Sunday.
Harman was 15 when he visited the sets of ‘Diljale’, which was directed by his father. Saroj Khan was choreographing the songs, while Veeru Devgan handled the action sequences.
Watching everyone on set perform clearly defined roles, Harman was curious about what his father was doing as a director. When he asked Harry Baweja about it, his father explained that a director brings together the work of different departments and turns it into one unified vision for a film.
“He just looked at me and said, ‘You’re absolutely right.’ He told me the job of a director is to effectively tell and narrate a story in the audiovisual medium. These HODs, these technicians, these crews — they’re a plethora of talent, but eventually they all have to fall into the vision of what the director wants to say,” Harman recalled.
Looking back, Harman said witnessing the filmmaking process at such a young age and watching experienced actors, technicians and choreographers at work helped shape his own approach as a filmmaker.
“Today, I feel so blessed that I had the chance to witness my father and all these great actors, technicians and choreographers doing their magic. Being around them at that age and seeing how a film comes together has definitely helped me become a better filmmaker,” he said.
Harman added that he continues to carry those lessons with him as he builds his own career and seeks to carry forward his father’s legacy.
