Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday recalled the 2016 surgical strike, saying the operation demonstrated India’s resolve to respond firmly to terrorism and showcased the country’s anti-terrorism policy to the world.
Addressing the 138th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, Modi said India was set to mark 10 years of the military operation carried out by the Indian Army on September 28-29, 2016, against terrorist hideouts across the Line of Control (LoC). The Prime Minister had also highlighted the surgical strike during an earlier Mann Ki Baat address, describing it as a response to terrorism and linking it with India’s commitment to national security.
“Ten years ago, on 28-29 September 2016, the Indian Army carried out a surgical strike on terrorist hideouts in Pakistan,” Modi said, recalling how Indian soldiers crossed the LoC to conduct the operation.
“The surgical strike showcased India’s anti-terrorism policy to the world,” he said.
Modi said India had suffered from terrorism for a long time and described the surgical strike as a response to that experience.
“Due to terrorism, India has felt pain for so long. Against that pain, our befitting reply was the surgical strike,” he said.
The Prime Minister said India had repeatedly demonstrated in recent years that terrorist attacks would draw a strong response, describing the country’s approach as a “zero-tolerance policy” against terrorism.
Recalling earlier attacks, Modi referred to the September 13, 2008, serial blasts in Delhi and the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks later that year. He said there had been a period when serial blasts had become a recurring feature in the country and argued that India’s response to terrorism had since changed.
Modi also recalled the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States, noting that Indian nationals were among those killed. He said that during his 2014 visit to the US, after becoming Prime Minister, he had paid tribute to Indian civilians who lost their lives in the attacks.
The Prime Minister said India’s long experience with terrorism had reinforced the need for a firm and sustained approach to dealing with the threat.
The official Prime Minister’s Office record of Mann Ki Baat shows that the programme continued through its 137th episode on August 30, 2026, with the surgical strike also having featured prominently in earlier editions.
