Justin Greaves struck a fluent maiden ODI century while John Campbell and Amir Jangoo hit half-centuries as West Indies posted 295/7 against India in the first ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium on Sunday.

Greaves scored 101 off 108 balls, hitting 12 boundaries, while Campbell made 62 off 60 balls with six fours and three sixes. Jangoo remained unbeaten on 58 off 43 balls, his second ODI fifty.

India wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav led the bowling effort with four wickets for 40 runs, helping India pull back the West Indies after the visitors had made a flying start.

Put in to bat in hot and humid conditions, West Indies raced to 85/0 in the powerplay. Greaves and Campbell took the Indian seamers on, with Greaves particularly aggressive, scoring 56 off 55 balls against the pacers.

Campbell brought up his fifty in the 17th over and was eventually dismissed by Kuldeep in the 20th over, top-edging a sweep to short fine leg. The 135-run opening stand was the West Indies’ third-highest against India in India.

Greaves reached his half-century in the 14th over and continued to anchor the innings despite being troubled by a shin issue. He completed his maiden ODI century with a sharp single through point before Kuldeep dismissed him shortly afterwards, trapping him leg before wicket with a googly.

Kuldeep then struck again immediately, dismissing Jewel Andrew for a golden duck after the batter edged a googly towards slip, where Rohit Sharma completed the catch.

Captain Shai Hope also fell to Kuldeep, miscued a lofted shot to backward point, while Keacy Carty was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna for 23.

Jangoo kept the West Indies moving towards the 300-run mark, reaching his second ODI fifty from 38 balls. He struck three fours in Prasidh’s 43rd over and later hit Gurnoor Brar for successive boundaries and a six.

Prasidh, who finished with 2/60, dismissed Roston Chase for 24 to end a 50-run partnership, while Nitish Kumar Reddy removed Matthew Forde in the final over.

West Indies ultimately finished on 295/7, leaving India a target of 296 to win the opening match of the three-game ODI series.

Brief Score: West Indies 295/7 in 50 overs (Justin Greaves 101, John Campbell 62, Amir Jangoo 58*; Kuldeep Yadav 4/40, Prasidh Krishna 2/60).
