Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised young people for their participation in the nationwide ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva Abhiyan’, urging citizens to support those trying to overcome substance abuse and remain alert to youngsters at risk of falling into addiction.
Addressing the 138th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, Modi said young people had not only pledged to stay away from intoxicants but had also taken responsibility for spreading awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
The Prime Minister said the campaign would continue for 100 weeks and has brought together volunteers associated with My Bharat and the National Service Scheme (NSS), besides schools, colleges and universities.
Several social and spiritual organisations have also joined the initiative, with pledge ceremonies and awareness programmes being organised across the country, he said.
Modi said he was particularly encouraged by the way young people were using their own creativity and communication styles to spread the message against addiction.
“Our young people are spreading the message of quitting addiction in their own language and through their own methods,” he said, adding that thousands of youngsters had responded to his earlier call on Mann Ki Baat to contribute creatively to the campaign.
He also referred to competitions being organised through the My Bharat app, including anthem and slogan writing and street plays. Young people are also sharing awareness content on social media using the hashtag #NASHAMUKTYUVA, he said.
The Prime Minister said health check-ups and medication camps would also be organised in the coming days as part of the campaign.
With the festive season approaching, Modi urged citizens to remain vigilant and support people who may be struggling with substance abuse.
“If a young person is heading towards a bad habit, around you, talk to him. If someone is willing to quit drugs, support them,” he said, calling for collective efforts to advance the goal of a drug-free youth and a developed India.
