Actress Divya Dutta has spoken about the technical aspects of acting and recalled how senior actors helped her understand and fine-tune her craft early in her career.
Divya, who is receiving a positive response for her recently released film Last Man in Tower, was speaking to IANS alongside co-star Manoj Bajpayee and director Ben Rekhi during the film’s promotions in Mumbai’s Andheri West.
Recalling her early days, Divya said she initially struggled with aspects of performance that affected how she appeared on screen, despite giving her best. She credited her seniors for guiding her and pointing out where she needed to improve.
The actress said she gradually learnt that technical aspects such as delivering lines and positioning oneself correctly need to become instinctive before an actor can fully immerse themselves in a scene.
She also spoke about the importance of responding naturally to a co-actor during a take. According to Divya, looking into a co-actor’s eyes can evoke different emotions in every take, making each performance distinct.
She added that actors should allow such spontaneous moments to unfold instead of becoming overly restricted by pre-decided instructions or boundaries.
Last Man in Tower, based on Aravind Adiga’s novel of the same name, is set against the rapidly changing landscape of Mumbai.
Manoj Bajpayee plays a retired schoolteacher and widower living in an ageing apartment complex. When a wealthy developer offers residents a lucrative deal to sell the building for redevelopment into a luxury tower, most agree, but Manoj’s character refuses to move, becoming the lone obstacle to the project.
The film is currently playing in cinemas.
