Customers of several public sector banks got an additional opportunity to complete branch-related banking work on Sunday, September 27, ahead of a proposed three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to September 30.
State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank and other public sector banks are operating on Sunday under a special arrangement aimed at ensuring continued access to regular banking services before the proposed strike.
The Sunday opening covers public sector banks (PSBs) and regional rural banks (RRBs). Customers requiring branch services can use the additional working day, subject to the operational arrangements and staffing at individual branches.
The decision followed a September 21 meeting involving officials from the Finance Ministry, public sector banks, regional rural banks, the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and NABARD.
The arrangement assumes significance as September 26 and 27 fall on Saturday and Sunday, immediately followed by the proposed strike. The additional working day is intended to give customers an opportunity to complete important transactions before branch services could be affected by the strike.
The public sector banks operating on Sunday include SBI, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, Bank of India, Indian Bank, Union Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, UCO Bank, Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank and Punjab & Sind Bank.
The arrangement also covers 28 regional rural banks, including Punjab Gramin Bank, Haryana Gramin Bank, Himachal Pradesh Gramin Bank, Jammu and Kashmir Grameen Bank, Rajasthan Gramin Bank, Uttar Pradesh Gramin Bank, Uttarakhand Gramin Bank, West Bengal Gramin Bank, Andhra Pradesh Grameena Bank, Bihar Gramin Bank, Gujarat Gramin Bank, Karnataka Grameena Bank, Kerala Grameena Bank, Maharashtra Gramin Bank, Odisha Grameen Bank and Tamil Nadu Grama Bank.
The special Sunday opening does not automatically apply to private sector banks.
The proposed three-day strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) and other bank unions from September 28 to September 30.
