India’s Ancy Sojan won the women’s long jump silver medal at the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 on Sunday after China’s Huang Yingying produced a 6.55m effort with her final jump to edge the Indian by two centimetres in a dramatic finish.
Shaili Singh, who remained in medal contention for much of the competition, finished fourth with a best effort of 6.42m at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.
Ancy moved into the gold-medal position with her opening attempt of 6.49m. Her second jump was ruled a foul, but the opening effort kept her at the top as the competition progressed.
Shaili began with 6.25m before improving to 6.34m in her second attempt. She repeated the distance with her third jump and remained in medal contention as the field was reduced to the top eight after three rounds.
The contest at the top intensified in the fourth round. Shaili registered 6.41m after requesting a review of her jump to move into third place. Ancy managed 6.31m but retained the lead with her opening 6.49m.
Huang then matched Ancy’s 6.49m in the fifth round to draw level. Ancy responded with a 6.53m effort to reclaim the lead and put herself within one jump of gold.
However, Huang produced her best effort with her final attempt, jumping 6.55m to move two centimetres ahead of Ancy. The Indian’s last jump measured 6.49m, leaving her with silver.
Shaili was also overtaken in the closing stages. After moving into third with 6.41m in the fourth round, she improved marginally to 6.42m in the fifth. China’s Mengyi Tan then produced a 6.46m final jump to claim bronze, leaving Shaili fourth.
The result gave India its second women’s long jump gold-or-silver medal at the Asian Games since Anju Bobby George won gold in 2002.
For Ancy, the medal adds to a breakthrough 2026 season in which she set a national record of 6.88m at a World Athletics Continental Tour event in Bhubaneswar.
