Three Indian Army Agniveers who went missing during floods in Arunachal Pradesh’s Dibang Valley on August 14 have been declared dead after their identities were confirmed through DNA testing, the Army said.
The deceased have been identified as Aditya Kumar, Kundan Kumar and Vinod Yadav. They were deployed in the rugged Dibang region when a cloudburst triggered landslides and flash floods.
Eastern Army Commander Lt General V.M. Krishnan and all ranks of the Army paid tribute to the three soldiers and conveyed condolences to their bereaved families.
The Army said the three Agniveers made the supreme sacrifice while performing their duties with valour and affirmed its support to their families during the period of grief.
Mortal remains recovered several days after the soldiers went missing were identified through DNA testing and subsequently handed over to their families. The urns containing their ashes reached their respective native villages on Saturday.
Aditya Kumar, a native of Bihar’s Vaishali, was cremated in Arunachal Pradesh with full military honours. His ashes were later taken to his ancestral village, where villagers organised a Tiranga Yatra to pay their final respects.
Vinod Yadav hailed from Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh, while Kundan Kumar was from Bihar. Their families had endured prolonged uncertainty following their disappearance until DNA testing confirmed their identities.
The Dibang region’s rugged terrain and difficult geographical conditions posed significant challenges to search and rescue operations following the floods and landslides.
