Johannesburg, September 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

At least 11 people were killed and eight others critically injured after a minibus taxi and a truck collided head-on in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Province, local media reported on Sunday.

The accident occurred at around 4 a.m. local time on the N2 highway in the Inkosi Mtubatuba Municipality, according to the provincial Department of Transport and Human Settlements.

The northbound minibus taxi collided with the southbound truck and caught fire. Eight people sustained critical injuries, including burn injuries, and were taken to hospital, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation will work with police to establish the exact cause of the crash.

Minibus taxis are among South Africa’s main modes of public transport but are frequently involved in fatal road accidents.

The latest crash comes two weeks after another major road accident in the country claimed at least 21 lives.

On September 13, two minibus taxis and a station wagon collided on the N1 highway between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka in the Western Cape Province.

Police spokesperson Christopher Spies told Xinhua that emergency personnel found two Toyota minibus taxis involved in a head-on collision and a Suzuki station wagon that had collided with one of the taxis.

Eighteen occupants were initially declared dead at the scene, while several others were taken to nearby medical facilities. Police subsequently opened a culpable homicide case to investigate the crash, with the Western Cape Mobility Department later confirming that the death toll had risen to 21.
