Kerala BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Sunday defended his “fraud” remark against Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and sought an apology from him over his “traitor” allegation against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission.
The exchange came amid a political row over reports of differences within the Election Commission of India (ECI) in connection with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The ECI has denied reports of such differences.
Rahul Gandhi had earlier accused the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of undermining the electoral process, using the term “deshdrohi” and calling for an investigation.
Chandrasekhar had subsequently called Gandhi “India’s biggest fraud”, prompting Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan to condemn the BJP leader’s remarks as baseless and abusive.
Responding to Satheesan on Sunday, Chandrasekhar said he seldom engaged in personal attacks on political opponents but claimed he was “compelled” to do so in Gandhi’s case. He accused the Congress leader of spreading what he described as “lies and misinformation” against the government, BJP and Prime Minister Modi.
Chandrasekhar also criticised Gandhi’s remarks against the Election Commission and defended the removal of what he described as “fake, dummy and illegal voters” from electoral rolls during the SIR exercise.
He said he would stop referring to Gandhi as a “fraud” if the Congress leader apologised to Prime Minister Modi for the “deshdrohi” remark and apologised to the Election Commission for what Chandrasekhar described as false claims.
“If you get Rahul to apologize for calling our PM Narendra Modi a ‘deshdrohi’, and have him apologize to Election Commission for lying, then I promise to stop referring to Rahul Gandhi as a fraud,” Chandrasekhar said.
The BJP leader also accused Gandhi of pursuing politics based on “fraud and corruption”, while maintaining that respect in politics had to be earned through work and service to the country.
