The Narayani River in Nepal crossed its danger level on Sunday as water levels continued to rise, prompting authorities to issue a special flood warning for parts of Chitwan and Nawalparasi and caution residents living along the river to move to safer, higher ground.
The transboundary river, known as the Gandak in India, could also pose a flood risk to downstream areas across the border if high flows persist.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) issued the warning after the Centre of Hydrology and Water Resources Research (CHWRR) reported that the Narayani’s water level had reached around 11 metres at 7.45 a.m., against a danger level of 9 metres.
The CHWRR said the river level at the Devghat monitoring station in Chitwan was expected to rise further until Sunday afternoon and could peak at around 13 metres at about 11 a.m. It warned that the water level was likely to remain above the danger mark until the evening.
High flows were also reported in several tributaries. The Kali Gandaki River was flowing significantly above its danger level, while the Seti, Madi, Marsyangdi, Daraundi and Chepe rivers had crossed their warning levels and were continuing to rise. The Budhi Gandaki and Trishuli rivers were also approaching their warning marks.
The authorities warned of a high risk of flooding and inundation in low-lying and vulnerable areas along the Narayani in Chitwan, Nawalparasi East and Nawalparasi West. All three districts border India.
Residents were advised to avoid unnecessary movement near riverbanks, bridges, embankments and other vulnerable locations. People living along the Narayani and its tributaries were asked to remain alert and follow instructions issued by local administrations, security agencies and other authorities.
The warning comes amid heavy rainfall in several parts of Nepal since September 24. The country has already witnessed severe flooding in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems.
In another rain-related incident on Sunday, a landslide buried a house in Bhaskatta of Mathagadhi Rural Municipality in western Nepal’s Palpa district, leaving three people missing, according to Nepal Police. A police team was deployed for rescue operations.
Meanwhile, flooding in the Kali Gandaki swept away 25 houses in the Farse area of Jaljala Rural Municipality-8 in Parbat district. Police said around 80 houses were located in the settlement and the remaining structures were also at risk.
No casualties were reported in the incident, while all residents of the settlement were moved to a safe location.
