External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called for an end to hostilities in the Gulf and Ukraine, warning that the conflicts are affecting food and energy security and threatening economic progress well beyond the regions directly involved.
Addressing the UN General Assembly, Jaishankar said India remained deeply concerned over the continuing conflicts and was prepared to contribute to efforts aimed at improving the situation, particularly in ensuring food and energy security. His remarks came amid wider UN discussions on the global consequences of conflicts, including disruptions to shipping and essential commodity supplies.
“India calls upon all parties to exercise restraint, de-escalate tensions, ensure protection of civilians, and uninterrupted flow of energy and commerce,” Jaishankar said while referring to the conflict in the Gulf.
He also highlighted the need to protect seafarers and maintain uninterrupted movement of foodgrains and energy supplies. The UN has separately warned that attacks and disruption of maritime traffic in the Middle East and the impact of the Ukraine conflict are putting pressure on shipping routes and global supplies of energy, fertilisers and agricultural commodities.
On Ukraine, Jaishankar said India supported ongoing initiatives aimed at bringing peace and stressed the need to safeguard maritime personnel and maintain the movement of essential commodities.
Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, he said: “As Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, endless war must give way now to an end to war.”
Jaishankar also reiterated India’s position on the Israel-Palestine issue, saying New Delhi supports a two-state solution under which Israel and Palestine live side by side as sovereign states. He described the approach as essential for durable peace and said India was contributing to humanitarian assistance and relief efforts for Palestinians.
The call for ending the conflicts came as the 81st UN General Assembly’s high-level debate focused on peace, development and international cooperation. The General Assembly’s 2026 programme has also featured discussions on the wider effects of conflicts and the need for diplomatic efforts to reduce escalation.
