Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday stepped up his attack on the Congress, alleging corruption worth Rs 12 lakh crore during the previous UPA government and contrasting its record with the Narendra Modi government’s railway spending in Gujarat.
Addressing a gathering at Sabarmati Station in Ahmedabad, Shah challenged Congress leaders to discuss their record with the public using figures, particularly over railway allocations to Gujarat.
“What did you do in 10 years apart from scams, scandals and corruption worth Rs 12 lakh crore?” Shah said, referring to the previous Congress-led government.
He also claimed that no allegation of corruption involving even “four annas” had been levelled against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his 12 years in office. The Rs 12 lakh crore figure is a claim Shah has used previously while alleging corruption under the previous government.
Shah highlighted the increase in Gujarat’s railway allocation, saying the state received an annual average of Rs 589 crore during 2009-14, compared with Rs 17,366 crore allocated for 2026-27. Railway Ministry figures also put the annual allocation at Rs 17,366 crore, more than 29 times the 2009-14 average.
The Home Minister urged Congress leaders to come forward for a discussion “with figures” and criticised what he described as their claims about the present government’s performance.
Shah was speaking at a programme marking the launch and inauguration of several railway projects at Sabarmati. The projects included a Rs 700-crore WAG-12 locomotive maintenance shed, deployment of the Kavach train protection system, automatic signalling works and doubling of the Sabarmati-Sarkhej section. He also flagged off India’s first LNG-powered train.
The railway initiatives launched at Sabarmati are part of a wider expansion of Gujarat’s rail infrastructure. The Railway Ministry has said the state’s annual average railway allocation has risen from Rs 589 crore in 2009-14 to Rs 17,366 crore in 2026-27.
Shah also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and railway officials for the redevelopment of Sabarmati station and expansion of rail facilities, recalling how connectivity around the station had changed with links to the Metro and state transport facilities.
