India and Canada are preparing to take their bilateral relationship “to a higher level”, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said after meeting Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Jaishankar described the discussion as productive in a social media post, signalling continued momentum in the relationship following a period of diplomatic strain.
“Always a pleasure to meet FM @AnitaAnandMP of Canada #UNGA81,” Jaishankar said. “A productive discussion as we prepare to take the relationship to a higher level,” he added.
He also shared photographs and a short video of the meeting. Neither side immediately announced a new agreement or disclosed specific outcomes from the discussion.
The latest engagement comes against the backdrop of a broader effort by India and Canada to rebuild senior-level diplomatic and institutional ties. The two countries adopted a new roadmap for bilateral relations in October 2025, covering economic cooperation, energy, security, critical minerals and people-to-people ties.
The two sides have since maintained regular ministerial engagement. Canadian officials said in September that the relationship had gained momentum through high-level exchanges and progress in areas including energy, critical minerals, science and technology, education, security and defence. Both governments have reiterated their intention to conclude negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by the end of 2026.
Trade remains a major component of the renewed engagement. The two countries have set a shared objective of more than doubling bilateral trade to CAD 70 billion by 2030, while negotiations cover goods, services, investment and other areas of economic cooperation.
Energy and critical minerals are also part of the bilateral agenda, alongside technology, education and security cooperation. Canada and India have separately been advancing discussions on energy and uranium supplies as part of their broader economic partnership.
The latest meeting between Jaishankar and Anand comes days after annual Foreign Office Consultations between the two countries in New Delhi, where both sides reviewed progress across multiple areas of cooperation.
