Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh on Sunday hit out at opposition leaders over the ongoing debate surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the Election Commission and the INDIA bloc meeting.
Targeting Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Singh said Gandhi considers the electoral process fair when he wins elections but blames the Election Commission and Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) when he loses.
“However, where he (Rahul Gandhi) loses, he blames the Election Commission and EVMs, claiming that votes were stolen,” Singh said. He further alleged that Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi had committed “vote theft”.
Singh also levelled allegations against Sonia Gandhi over her citizenship and electoral registration and said she should be jailed. These were claims made by the Union Minister and were not independently established in his remarks.
“I feel that Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi are hatching a conspiracy against the country. Why did Sonia Gandhi not take Indian citizenship?” Singh said.
Singh also alleged that Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sonia Gandhi opposed Prime Minister Narendra Modi because he came from a poor family.
The remarks came amid the ongoing political controversy over the SIR exercise. The Election Commission has described electoral-roll revision as part of its constitutional mandate and has stated that electoral rolls must include eligible citizens while ensuring that ineligible entries are excluded.
Responding to AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi’s description of SIR as a “backdoor NRC”, Singh attacked the Hyderabad MP and likened him to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, making comments about the Constitution and Sharia law.
“I keep saying that some Jinnahs have been born again. One of them is Owaisi,” Singh said, according to ANI.
Singh is currently visiting Nagpur. On Saturday, he attended the inaugural ceremony of the Indian Cotton Summit 2026 alongside Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.
In a social media post, Singh said the summit focused on increasing cotton productivity, raising farmers’ incomes, promoting sustainable farming and strengthening the textile value chain.
