Tejaswin Shankar could not defend his decathlon silver from the Hangzhou Asian Games but created history by becoming the first Indian man to win two medals in the gruelling discipline at the continental showpiece, securing bronze at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday.
Shankar finished third with 7,934 points. Japan’s Yuma Maruyama won the gold with 8,123 points, while China’s Chen Xinghua took silver with 8,012 points.
The Indian athlete remained in contention for silver deep into the competition and was leading the standings with 5,270 points before the discus throw.
He earned 932 points by finishing third in his 110m hurdles heat in 14.33 seconds. However, his best discus throw of 36.77 metres was around four metres short of his personal best, although it was enough for third place in the event.
His overall tally rose to 5,869 points after the discus, but athletes from China and Japan moved ahead of him in the standings.
The final events of the decathlon were pole vault and javelin throw, neither of which is among Shankar’s stronger disciplines, making it difficult for him to regain the silver position.
In other athletics results, Manju Rani finished sixth in the women’s marathon race walk in 3:40:17, while Priyanka Goswami was disqualified at the 9km mark.
India also made progress in surfing, with Sivaraj Babu reaching the third round of the men’s shortboard competition after defeating Iran’s Davoud Khadir with a score of 8.96.
Sivaraj recorded scores of 4.83 and 4.13 from his two waves to advance, where he will join fellow Indian Kishore Kumar.
Earlier, Sugar Shanti Gayen and Kamali Prakash also progressed to the third round. Gayen defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chen Wan-yu 7.33-5.40, while Prakash beat Singapore’s Camille Marie Spaccarotella 7.57-4.50.
All four Indian surfers competing in the men’s and women’s shortboard events have now advanced to the third round.
