Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday welcomed the Election Commission of India’s clarification on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, saying it reaffirmed the credibility and integrity of constitutional institutions.
In a post on X, Naidu said the clarification issued by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had put to rest misconceptions surrounding the SIR exercise. He stressed that decisions related to the revision were being taken collectively and in accordance with established institutional procedures.
“Electoral outcomes reflect the people’s mandate. In a robust democracy, leadership also means accepting both victories and defeats with grace and humility,” Naidu said.
His remarks came amid a political controversy over reports of differences within the three-member Election Commission concerning the functioning of the poll panel and aspects of the electoral-roll revision process.
The ECI, after a full Commission meeting on Saturday, said decisions relating to the SIR exercise had been approved unanimously by all three commissioners. It also clarified that letters sent by two Election Commissioners to the Cabinet Secretary were related to the functioning of an officer on deputation and were not connected to policy matters concerning the Commission or its IT division.
Naidu had earlier joined other NDA allies in calling for clarification from the Election Commission amid the controversy. The TDP had said that addressing public concerns was important to maintain confidence in the electoral process.
The TDP chief on Saturday said political leaders across party lines shared a responsibility to protect public confidence in India’s democratic institutions. He also criticised attempts to undermine confidence in the country’s electoral framework for short-term political gains, calling such efforts “deeply unfortunate”.
“Public trust in democratic institutions remains the cornerstone of our polity,” Naidu said, stressing the need for political leaders to uphold that confidence.
The ECI has maintained that the SIR process is being conducted according to established procedures and that its key decisions were taken unanimously. The Commission has also announced measures to simplify the process for voters who receive notices during the revision.
